World Calamity Control Day / International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction Day

October 12, 2020

The International Day for Disaster Reduction is an International Day that encourages every citizen and government to take part in building more disaster resilient communities and nations. The United Nations General Assembly designated October 13 as the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction as part of its proclamation of the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction.

In 2002, the General Assembly decided to maintain the annual observance as a vehicle to promote a global culture of natural disaster reduction, including prevention, mitigation, and preparedness.

In 2009, the UN General Assembly decided to designate October 13 as the official date for this day and also changed the name to International Day for Disaster Reduction.

Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) aims to reduce the damage caused by natural hazards like earthquakes, floods, droughts, cyclones etc through an ethic of prevention.
Disasters often follow natural hazards. A disaster's severity depends on how much impact a hazard has on society and the environment. The scale of the impact in turn depends on the choices we make for our lives and for our environment. These choices relate to how we grow our food, where and how we build our homes, what kind of government we have, how our financial system works and even what we teach in schools.
Each decision and action makes us more vulnerable to disasters - or more resilient to them.
