The Supreme Court has ruled that a high-powered committee to be headed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) secretary will be looking into the complaints over 4G internet restoration in Jammu and Kashmir. The Supreme Court was on Monday hearing a bunch of petitions demanding restoration of 4G internet services in Jammu and Kashmir. The pleas have claimed that the 2G internet services being provided in Jammu and Kashmir are not sufficient. The high-powered committee that will look into the demands will be headed by Secretary MHA and will include secretary of Ministry of Communications and the chief secretary of Jammu & Kashmir. During the hearing of a bunch of petitions seeking 4G internet for Jammu and Kashmir, Justice NV Ramana said, This court has to ensure that national security and human rights are balanced. We do recognize that UT has plunged into crisis. At the same time court is cognizant to the concerns related to ongoing pandemic and hardships. The court also observed that Kashmir is also going through the same crisis of coronavirus as the rest of the world and poor or no internet services can add to the hardships. The special MHA committee has been directed to examine the contentions made by petitioners and also the appropriateness of their contentions and the alternative remedy that can be provided. The petitioners seeking restoration of 4G internet services in the Union Territory had said that the 2G service is not sufficient for education, health and business purposes amid the ongoing coronavirus lockdown. Senior lawyer Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing for one of the petitioners, had last week argued in the court that doctors were unable to access information about coronavirus treatment due to poor internet connectivity. He also argued that the patients were unable to contact their doctors through video calls.
