Indias largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki India has posted its first quarterly loss in at least 15 years on Wednesday. The development comes in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, which has crippled many sectors including automobile. Like all automakers, Marutis sales and production activities were badly hit due to the pandemic. Lack of demand during the pandemic also led to a drastic drop in sales. Maruti Suzuki has logged a quarterly loss of over Rs 268 crore for the June quarter its lowest in at least 15 years as compared to over Rs 1,370 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. The carmakers revenue also dipped sharply by over 78 per cent on a year-on-year basis to Rs 4,110.6 crore. It may be noted that the unit sales at the carmaker dropped 81 per cent to 76,599 vehicles for the quarter ended June. Its sales in the domestic market stood at over 67,000 while nearly 9,600 units were exported. Commenting on the result, Maruti Suzuki India said it the June quarter was unprecedented due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. It clarified that a large portion of the initial lockdown period saw zero production and sales.
