Aug 28, 2025:
Multiple landslides triggered by heavy rains in the Udhampur-Ramban belt on Thursday caused the Jammu-Srinagar national highway to be closed to traffic for the third day in a row, officials stated. Over 500 to 600 vehicles are stranded along the route as a result of the highway's closure. They claimed that multiple landslides blocked the 270-kilometer stretch between Jakheni and Chenani in Udhampur, which is the only all-weather road that connects Kashmir to the rest of the country. “Due to damage at a number of locations between Jakheni and Chenani, the highway is closed to vehicular traffic traveling from Jakheni in Udhampur to Srinagar. No vehicular movement shall be allowed from Nagrota in Jammu towards Reasi, Chenani, Patnitop, Doda, Ramban, Banihal, Srinagar,” a traffic police official said.
He said that commuters from Katra and Udhampur towns are asked to keep their photo ID cards so that they can move around without any problems. They stated that the Border Roads Organization (BRO) is working to remove blockades from the highway that occurred on Tuesday as a result of heavy rains and flash floods. The Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag highway is closed to vehicle traffic, according to the traffic advisory. It stated that traffic movement on the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari road would be permitted in a controlled manner upon receiving a green signal from the BRO and subject to favorable weather and good road conditions. Between 1130 and 1730, LMVs followed by HMVs will be permitted from Sonamarg to Kargil. “After the cut-off time, no vehicle shall be permitted. The advisory stated that security forces convoys traveling from Srinagar to Kargil and back should plan their movements so as not to disrupt civil traffic. According to the advisory, movement of LMVs shall be allowed on Mughal Road between Shopian district of Kashmir and Poonch district of Jammu region, subject to fair weather and good road condition, after getting a green signal from road maintenance agencies.
“LMVs and private cars shall be allowed from both sides on Mughal Road, i.e., from Jammu towards Srinagar and vice versa via Poonch. These vehicles shall be allowed from Behramgala in Poonch and Herpora in Shopian between 0700 hours and 1800 hours,” it said.
