Aug 19, 2025: Tariq Hameed Karra, president of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), went to Chashoti village in the Paddar area of the Kishtwar district to look at the situation on the ground after the devastating cloudburst that killed 63 people, injured over 100, and left many missing. Working president Raman Bhalla, senior Congress leader and former Minister Ghulam Mohammad Saroori, former MLC Naresh Gupta, Sham Lal Bhagat, and a significant number of members of the local leadership were with Karra. The leaders spoke with the families of the deceased, expressed their support for the victims, and reviewed the ongoing rescue and relief efforts. In an interview with the media, the PCC chief expressed grave concern regarding the failure of preventative measures and described the incident as "very tragic." “An advisory was issued 48 hours ago, but the question remains—why were individuals permitted to go there even after that? Karra stated, "There are definitely gaps in the rescue operations." He criticized the government for the excessive delay in building the Kishtwar-Machail Road, which was approved more than a decade ago but is still not a National Highway. The number of casualties could have been reduced if the bridge at Chashoti had been completed. He stated, "Many lives would have been saved." The head of the PCC urged the government to immediately announce a special aid and rehabilitation package for the flood and cloudburst victims in Kishtwar. He went on to say that the scale of the tragedy necessitates the immediate assistance of the Indian government. In the meantime, the head of the JKPCC met with Kishtwar party activists at the local DCC office to talk about the situation and the activities of the organization there. Asif Naqeeb, the president of the DCC, organized the gathering. The meeting went over the plan of action for the relief and rescue efforts following the devastation caused by the cloudburst at Chashoti in the district. Karra asked the party cadres to continue being actively involved in the relief and rescue efforts and to provide the afflicted with any assistance they could. He expressed gratitude to the entire population, NGOs, and party members for coming out to assist the affected individuals and the administration in this enormous tragedy. In light of the magnitude of the disaster, working president Raman Bhalla demanded a central package for relief and rehabilitation and expressed his grief, deep sympathies, and support for the affected population. Additionally, Sanjeev Panda, Neeraj Gupta, Jatin Vashisht, and Naveed Kichloo were in attendance.
