July 28, 2025: The Internet dubbed a Madhya Pradesh farmer the "poorest man in India" after a certificate showing his annual income of Rs 3 went viral on social media. The authorities responded by clarifying that the error was a "clerical error." This week, a picture of the income certificate that was given to Ramswaroop, 45, a resident of Nayagaon village in the Kothi tehsil of Satna district, with the signature of the tehsildar appeared on social media. On July 22, the document, which was signed by Tehsildar Saurabh Dwivedi, was widely shared on social media, and internet users referred to Ramswaroop as the "poorest man in the country." A new certificate was issued by July 25, bringing the farmer's reported annual income to Rs 30,000, or Rs 2,500 per month, after officials quickly jumped into action. According to the initial certificate, Ramswaroop was paid 25 paise per month. "It was a clerical mistake that has been fixed. Dwivedi clarified, "A new income certificate has been issued." The mistake was picked up by the Madhya Pradesh Congress, which shared the original certificate on X. In MP Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s rule, we discovered India’s poorest man! Only Rs. 3 per year in income! in its post, the party claimed. Isn't it surprising? a mission to cause poverty? "Because the chair now eats the commission itself," it claimed.
