Something like five people kicked the bucket and around 30 others were harmed after a products train slammed into the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express close to Rangapani station in West Bengal on Monday, police said.
Salvage activities are in progress at the spot, around seven km from North Bengal's New Jalpaiguri station, and the harmed people were being moved to local emergency clinics.
"Five people have kicked the bucket in the mishap till now and around 30 individuals endured wounds, which are not lethal," a senior cop said.
The two back compartments were wrecked because of the effect of the impact from behind by the train of the products train close to Rangapani station, around 7 km from North Bengal's New Jalpaiguri station, he said.
Boss Priest Mamata Banerjee, in a post on X, expressed: "Stunned to learn, quite recently, about a grievous train mishap, in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling locale. While subtleties are anticipated, Kanchenjunga Express has supposedly been hit by a merchandise train.
"DM, SP, specialists, ambulances and fiasco groups have been raced to the site for salvage, recuperation, clinical help. Activity on war-balance started."
The 13174 Kanchanjunga Express was headed for Sealdah from Agartala when the mishap happened around 9 am, the railroad official said.
