A 26-year-old man was arrested here for allegedly posting altered private photos of his partner on various social media platforms, police said on Wednesday.
Sanjay Kumar was in a straight relationship with his 24-year-old girlfriend for quite some time. They hail from Vellore, Tamil Nadu and have known each other since class 10. The couple planned to get married.
The man got his "joy" from reading comments posted under pictures uploaded by his girlfriend, they said. The woman and Sanjay Kumar filed a police complaint alleging that someone uploaded her private pictures on some social media platforms like Telegram and Instagram.
Based on the complaint, a case has been registered under Section 420 (cheating and dishonest disposition of property) of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant sections of the Information Technology Act, a senior police official said.
As part of the investigation, investigators contacted the relevant social media platforms to remove the images and also sought information about the alleged account holder through which they were uploaded.
Investigation revealed they were actually posted by her boyfriend, she added.
The accused was then taken into custody and confessed to the crime during interrogations. He also posted altered pictures of his friends and relatives on social media, police said.
