The death toll in the violence that broke out in Palleli in Manipur's Tengnoupal district has risen to three after a 37-year-old man succumbed to injuries sustained during treatment at a hospital, officials said on Saturday.
The man received bullet wounds in the head in the shootout between security forces and armed criminals.
They added that he died overnight during treatment at the Regional Institute of Medicine, Imphal (RIMS).
Earlier, two people were killed and 50 others, including an army major, were injured when hundreds of people from the majority community tried to invade tribal villages, officials said.

On Friday morning, an exchange of fire broke out in the village of Molnoi near Palleli between the security forces and armed people who attempted arson and violence in the village. As news of the shooting spread, large groups of Meitei community members, including Meira Paibis and Arambai Tenggol militiamen dressed in commando uniforms, tried to break through the security checkpoint and move towards Palleli.
Security forces tried to stop the crowd to ensure peace and stability in Palle, where the situation has been tense for several days.

Some gunmen dressed in police uniform and some of the crowd opened fire, resulting in a gunshot wound to an army major. The officer was evacuated by helicopter to Leimakhong Military Hospital. In addition, three more policemen were injured in the accident. In a calibrated response, soldiers used minimal force to disperse the crowd, officials said.
More than 45 women were injured after security forces fired tear gas to calm the situation, officials said.

A Friday morning shooting left one person dead, officials said.
According to the authorities, a 48-year-old man also died in the fire.
Meanwhile, locals including Meira Paibis blocked a group of RAF personnel on their way from Imphal to Pallel to quell the mob in Thoubal. This comes two days after thousands of protesters gathered at Phougakchao Ikhai in Bishnupur district on Wednesday and tried to break out of army barricades.
Although they claimed that they wanted to enter their abandoned houses in Torbung, sources in the security establishment said that apart from attacking them, the mob also wanted to loot tribal houses.
A day before the protest, a total curfew was imposed in all the five valley districts of Manipur as a precautionary measure.

More than 160 people have been killed and several hundred injured since ethnic violence erupted in Manipur on May 3 when a "Tribal Solidarity March" was organized in the hills to protest the demand of the majority Meitei community for Scheduled Tribe status.
Meites make up about 53 percent of Manipur's population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, make up 40 percent and live mostly in the hilly areas.
