Senator Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar was elected as interim prime minister of Pakistan on Saturday to lead the cash-strapped country and oversee general elections later this year.

Outgoing prime minister Shehbaz Sharif and opposition leader Raja Riaz confirmed their names after two rounds of negotiations.

Kakar, a Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) lawmaker, heads the caretaker government until new elections are held later this year.

Prime Minister Sharif recommended dissolving the National Assembly on August 9, three days before the mandate expires, so the next general election will be held in 90 days, according to the constitution.
