Scientists in the US have discovered that women who regularly consume sugar-sweetened beverages have an increased chance of acquiring liver cancer and dying from chronic liver disease.
The prospective Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study's 98,786 postmenopausal women were involved in the observational trial, which was directed by Brigham and Women's Hospital researchers in the US.
The study, which followed women for more than 20 years, discovered that 6.8% of women who regularly drank one or more sugar-sweetened beverages had an 85% higher risk of developing liver cancer and a 68% higher risk of dying from chronic liver disease.
According to the study, this information was compared to people who consumed fewer than three sugar-sweetened beverages per month.
To our knowledge, this is the first study to document a link between consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages.
