Last month was the hottest July on record, with exceptionally high temperatures on land and at sea, the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Commission said on Tuesday.
Scientists warned late last month that this was becoming the world's hottest month on record.
Samantha Burgess, deputy director of Copernicus, said this year was the third warmest on record.
"We just saw global air temperature and global ocean surface temperature set new all-time records in July," he said.
"This shows how quickly ambitious action is needed to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, which are the main driver of these record highs."

June also broke the previous month's temperature record, according to Copernicus, who based his calculations on data from 1950. Scorching temperatures have affected many parts of the planet, with heat records set from Death Valley in the US state of California to a village in northwest China while fighting fires in Canada and southern Europe.
