Chicken skin is a common skin condition that is aggravated during the cold months. Also called strawberry skin, it has to be managed throughout the year. Though winter sets the stage for various festivities, the season might not be great for your skin. Several skin conditions like dryness and itchiness get aggravated in the cold months and many skin diseases have to be treated with care. During this time, dermatologists reveal that cases of keratosis pilaris, a severe skin disease, are treated more often. Keratosis pilaris, also known as chicken skin or strawberry skin, happens when the hair follicles get blocked by oil, bacteria and dead skin, which are unable to come out. This forms dark spots that have a dotted and pitted appearance. Dr Shireen Furtado, Consultant, Medical & Cosmetic Dermatology, Aster CMI Hospital, said that the bumps are seen behind the arms and thighs. Sometimes, the condition is common among women who wax or shave their hair too often, according to Dr Nishita Ranka, Dermatologist at Founder of Dr Nishita'a Clinic for Skin, Hair & Aesthetics.Dr Furtado, however, said, "Most of the time it is genetic. Therefore, one might have keratin which has plugged the hair follicles and is unable to come out of it. Sometimes, it can be managed with some lifestyle changes. It is painless. However, people who have dandruff can experience itching and that could be painful," she said, adding that most times chicken skin feels like sandpaper.
