Have a happy eco-friendly Lohri by following these simple steps

13-01-2021

It is believed by many that the festival of Lohri commemorates the passing of the winter solstice. Lohri, a festival that is celebrated to mark the end of the winter as well. Traditionally, families light a bonfire, dance around it and celebrate the festival of Lohri. Characterised by folk songs and warmth, Lohri is a festival India looks forward to. While Lohri is a festival that is celebrated with a lot of joy, it is not very eco-friendly. As the world changes for the better in the new year, here are some steps that can make Lohri an eco-friendly festival:

1. Limit the use of wood
Take a resolution to use lesser wood this year. Make a smaller bonfire than usual and minimise the use of wood. This will reduce the smoke, leaving the air relatively cleaner.

2. Don't use cow dung
Burning cow dung leads to air pollution as it burns quickly and emits smoke. The same leads to difficulty in breathing and leads to a rise in pollutants.

3. Don't use dry leaves
Using dry leaves and branches for creating a bonfire is an old Lohri tradition. This year, skip the dry leaves to prevent the emission of toxic gases.

4. Pool a bonfire
Instead of having a private Lohri session, pool money and use the same to have a Lohri for everyone. Instead of lighting separate bonfires, get together and celebrate Lohri with a larger number of people.
