Mahamaya temple is situated behind the Bahu Fort. It is about 5 kilometers outside of Jammu. According to a legend, the brave freedom fighter Mahamaya lost her life to a fight with foreign invaders. She belonged to the Dogra Dynasty.

To honor this gallant lady, a temple was built. It celebrates women power and sings in praise of many brave women of that century in form of beautifully erected statues and idols. The pooja takes places every morning and evening. No buses or trains are available for this route, so you may as well hire a car or taxi. The Mahamaya Temples location is splendid. It is situated atop a hill and middle of a forest.

That gives a panoramic view of the whole town. You can even sight Trukuta Mountains at a distance. The sometimes silent, sometimes gushing waters of Tawi River along the temple add to the charm of the place. A visit here will fill you up with positive spiritual energy and you get motivation to do more, be heroic maybe? Well, if you do feel heroic, try fighting the monkeys around the place, there are numerous of them there! The temple opens from 6am to 8pm.
