India sees biggest jump with nearly 2,000 new coronavirus cases as lockdown nears end

India has seen the biggest single day spike in coronavirus cases with almost 2,000 new cases being detected across states, taking the total to over 35,000.

According to the latest Health Ministry data, 1,993 new coronavirus cases have been detected in 24 hours while the death toll has gone up by 73. The total death toll in India now stands at 1,147.

This comes even as the Centre's nationwide lockdown nears an end on May 3. While several states have suggested further extension of the lockdown, a final decision is yet to be announced by the government.

Top Developments:

1. India has recorded 1,993 new coronavirus cases, taking the total to 35,043. This is the biggest single day spike India has seen so far with almost 2,000 new cases in 24 hours.

2. The death toll has also gone up by 73, taking the total to 1,147. On Wednesday 63 people had died.

3. According to the health ministry, there are 25,007 active cases in the country while 8,888 have been either cured or discharged.

4. Maharashtra has the highest number of coronavirus cases at 10,498. The state has also recorded the maximum number of deaths, which now stand at 459.

5. Gujarat is the second worst-affected states with 214 deaths and over 4,300 cases.

6. In West Bengal, the official death count is 33 while the government has said 72 others who had coronavirus and died, passed away because of their co-morbidities. The government has Covid-19 among these 72 cases is “incidental”.

7. As the nationwide lockdown nears an end on May 3 after an extension, the Centre recorded the biggest jump in number of coronavirus cases.

8. The Union Health Ministry has prepared a list of containment zones across states. All metro cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, have been declared red zones.

9. The Centre has demarcated all districts across the country into different zones according to the severity of the coronavirus situation. The districts have been categorised as Red Zone, Orange Zone and Green Zone.

10. The move comes ahead of May 3, when the lockdown is expected to end. The list of containment zones will help the states prepare a lockdown exit plan for the non-containment zones.
