Speyside Whisky Festival Comes to India

Speyside, a small region in the fertile valley of River Spey in the north-east of Scotland, is the single most important region for Single Malt distilling in the world. As many of 50 % of Scottish Single Malts come from here, including big names like Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Aberlour, Macallan, Strathisla and Cardhu. So it is not surprising that the annual Speyside Whisky Festival is among the largest and most popular in the world.

First launched in 1999, the five-day festival in May brings together every Speyside distillery who create food and drinks experiences for a large number of whisky lovers from around the globe who make the annual pilgrimage. The festival culminates with the Speyside Whisky Awards which is now considered to be among the most prestigious honour among Single Malt makers.

Among the regulars at the festival are two Mumbai whisky lovers Swati Sharma, a marketing professional, and Vinayak Singh, an investment banker. Impressed by what they saw in Scotland, they set up The Dram Club in Mumbai two years ago with the purpose of bringing together drinks enthusiasts and experience the finer nuances of some of the best whiskies from around the in the world. A seat at their frequent whisky dinners in the city is a much sought after privilege these days.

This weekend, on Saturday, February 15, The Dram Club is organising the Indian edition of the Speyside Whisky Festival at Mumbai’s The Park Hotel in Juhu. Though no awards will be given out, the founders say that the day-long event will try to capture the spirit of Scottish original.

Among the events planned include a four-course lunch paired with various iterations of The Glenlivet, curated by the renowned chef Sarita Pereira; a blind tasting of eight Speyside whiskies; masterclasses involving whiskies like Glenfiddich, Amrut and Paul John; and a dessert pairing with GlenGrant. For whisky lovers, it is a festival not to be missed.
