The greenery of Jammu University is offering an expansion of departments. The space for the expansion of departments is steadily getting reduced. In such a situation, construction is being started on the vacant land adjacent to the departments. This is reducing the vacant land and greenery in the entire university. Trees are being cut in expansion. University management has failed to solve this problem. Even the university does not yet have any concrete plan.

The University of Jammu, which caters to the higher education needs of the ten districts of Jammu division, now sees less space. Greenery is becoming less.

Trees are being cut due to construction work for expanding departments. It would not be wrong to say that despite all the efforts, the University of Jammu has not been able to acquire its land in the possession of the army. During the time of former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, it was decided to hand over 32 kanals of mechanical division to the university along with Maulana Azad Memorial College in front of the university. This decision was made in the year 2006. To date, the decision in this direction has not been implemented.

From time to time matters including former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh also came up before the Home Ministers, former Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir. All the Vice Chancellors who came to Jammu University in the last decade and a half-raised the matter of handing over the land in possession of the army occupied with the University. Letters were written to the Center, but nothing was received except assurances.

The most important decision was approved by the State Administrative Council under the chairmanship of former Governor Satyapal Malik to hand over the land occupied by the army to Jammu University. Despite this, nothing has happened in this direction till now. However, the army was asked to make arrangements to give land in different places. If such expansion work continues on campus, only buildings will be visible. There will be no place to walk. At this time, work is being done on the vacant land in front of the administrative department. Even before this, the extension of the examination department was made.

The apathy of governments continues to be heavy

The sadness of governments in East Jammu and Kashmir has always been an obstacle in the expansion of Jammu University. No action was taken when former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad decided to give 32 canals of mechanical division to Jammu University near Maulana Azad Memorial College. However, former VC Pro. Amitam Mattoo also formed a task force to set up Rafta with the government. The government failed to give an alternative place to the mechanical division. The concerned departments did not care. The correspondence of the university was ignored, the result of which is that the mechanical division is still there. It was a very high-level case of the land occupied by the Army with Jammu University. So, from the former Prime Minister to the current Prime Minister also arose. It is not possible to vacate the place until the army is given a place elsewhere.

It is true that we have less space. If we get additional space, then development will get a boost. There needs to be space to create new departments or expand them. One way is to build multi-story buildings. We have sent a proposal for additional land to the government. It is expected that if additional land is available, new departments will open there. This will solve the land problem. -Pro. Manoj Dhar, VC Jammu University
