The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said on Thursday that the lander module of the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft has successfully separated from the propulsion module that has been carrying it in space all these days.
Elaborating on the Chandrayaan-3 mission, Dr. Amitabha Ghosh, a NASA Mars Rover mission member, said the achievement was significant as it was quite a challenging mission. "A soft landing is very difficult to achieve. It is quite complicated. In the Mars mission, we called it 7 minutes of terror," Ghosh said while explaining the technical details of the landing. The lander of Chandrayaan-3, which consists of a lander (Vikram) and a rover (Pragyan), is now ready for launch into an orbit that will take it closer to the surface of the Moon. A soft landing on the South Pole of the Moon is scheduled for August 23rd.
