PDP leader and former prime minister Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday called on Lord Ram and his "Raghu" clan to say that the promise made by Indians to the natives of Jammu and Kashmir in 1947 is being judged in the Supreme Court, which they "happily" still do have some faith.
Addressing the media on the lawn of the Supreme Court, the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader said the matter before the Supreme Court is about the people of India.
"This country cannot be ruled by the will of the majority. This country is ruled by the Constitution," he said, adding that the abrogation of Article 370 is about the people of India and the promise they made to the natives of Kashmir in 1947.
"We know what happened to state institutions. Fortunately, we still have some faith in the Supreme Court of this country. I want to appeal to them that the country believes in the principle "Raghukul reet sada Chali aayi, Pran Jaye par vachan na jaye".

"I am not referring to those who kill 'Jai Shri Ram' and lynch in the name of 'Jai Shri Ram'. I am talking about those people of the majority community who believe in 'Ramchandra ji', his vachan (promise) that “Raghukul reet sada Chali aayi, Pran Jaye par vachan na jaye”, so I think “vachan” is being tried in the Supreme Court today,” said the PDP leader.
In Hindu mythology, the Raghu clan, to which Lord Ram belonged, believed in the principle of never breaking a promise, even if it costs you your life to fulfill it. The PDP leader said it was up to the Supreme Court and the people of India to decide whether the country would be governed by the constitution or "by the differences of a particular party".
He said he was happy that the court did not accept the Centre's claim that the situation in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir had improved after the abrogation of the provisions of Article 370. Mufti claimed that in the last five years, many Kashmiris pandits were forced to leave the valley.
Mufti said the central government claimed he had stopped fighting in Kashmir. According to him, the military did it. He claimed that the Center destroyed Jammu and Kashmir to end the struggle.
When Pakistan invaded Jammu and Kashmir in 1947, its unarmed natives fought back against the invaders with the help of the Indian Army.
