A rocket carrying a lunar lander exploded in Russia on Friday for the first time in nearly 50 years.
The launch of the Luna-25 spacecraft from the Russian Far East Cosmodrome to the Moon is Russia's first since 1976 when it was part of the Soviet Union.
Russia's lunar lander is expected to reach the moon on August 23, around the same day as India's rover, which was launched on July 14.
Only three governments managed to land on the moon: the Soviet Union, the United States, and China. India and Russia aim to be the first to land on the South Pole of the Moon. Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, said it wants to prove that Russia "is a country capable of carrying a payload to the Moon" and "provide Russia with guaranteed access to the lunar surface." "Exploring the moon is not the goal," said Vitaly Egorov, a popular Russian space analyst.
"The goal is a political competition between two superpowers - China and the United States - and several other countries that also want to claim the title of superpower in space."
