PM Modi to Inaugurate Chenab Bridge - The Highest Railway Bridge in the World

India now holds the highest soaring railway bridge in the entire world. The Chenab Bridge is about 29 meters (95 bases) taller than the Eiffel Tower and 359 meters (about 1,180 bases) in the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region of India, over the Chenab River.

The 1,315-meter-long bridge is part of a more expansive plan to extend the Kashmir Valley to the Indian rail network. In addition to the Chenab Bridge, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Balamulla Railway Link (USBRL) design includes the future of the longest transit bridge in the country and the first leg of Indian Railways.

In March, The Ministry of Railways stated in a press release that the facility in northern India shall open in late December 2023 or January 2024 after decades of construction.

“New Delhi predicts that this bridge and the excellent connectivity it is expected to provide will be another significant asset for the development of the region,” said the Wilson Center for South Asian Studies, Director Michael Kugelman said.

For the Prime Minister, who came into national governance in 2014 with pledges of nationalism and future eminence, investments in structures such as the Chenab Bridge and broader rail link design are a big step for society. This is being considered an essential tool for integration and politics, the influence linking different regions with important metropolises.
