National shooter Konica Layak was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside her hostel room in West Bengal’s Howrah. Konica, a native of Jharkhand, had been training with former Olympian and Arjuna Award winner Joydeep Karmakar in the West Bengal capital. She was found hanging in her hostel room at Bally neighbourhood in Howrah. The body was sent for post-mortem examination and her parents were alerted, Times Now’s Tamal Shah reports. Police sources say a handwritten note was found inside the hostel room where the shooter’s body was found hanging. The note, apparently signed by the shooter, indicates that she committed suicide, possibly due to performance-related issues. She sought forgiveness from her parents. The police are yet to confirm that Layak died by suicide. The note recovered from the scene will be analysed to confirm that the handwriting on it is that of the shooter, Shah says. It may be noted that Bollywood actor Sonu Sood, known for his acts of kindness, had gifted Layak a rifle earlier this year. Layak, who used to rely on rifles borrowed from her friends or coach, took to Twitter to request the actor to help her in buying a rifle. Soon the actor responded to her appeal, saying she'd get a rifle soon. Later, when Layak received the rifle, she thanked Sood on Twitter. This comes months after a former athlete, who won several national and international medals in diving, died by suicide at her residence in Jayanagar locality of Karnataka’s Bengaluru.
Shilpa Balaraj (41), an Ekalavya awardee, allegedly ended her life by hanging herself in her room. She had left a suicide note, wherein she stated that she was depressed due to joblessness. She was unemployed since the pandemic-induced lockdown last year. The organisers of a summer camp had shown willingness to hire the now-deceased athlete, who was a diving and swimming trainer. She was hoping to get a job soon, but things changed as the coronavirus infections started rising, prompting the authorities to bring in restrictions related to swimming pools to curb the spread of the virus. Subsequently, she committed suicide.
