Soldier killed, two injured after avalanche hits Army post in Kashmir's Kupwara

An Army soldier was killed and two others were injured after an avalanche hit a post along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara of Jammu and Kashmir. According to Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management, the avalanche hit Roshan post at around 8 pm on Tuesday.

All the three soldiers were, however, rescued immediately and rushed to a hospital. One among them was declared dead while two are under treatment.

The deceased soldier has been identified as Rifleman Nikhil Sharma (25) of 7 Rashtriya Rifles. The two others are Ramesh Chand and Gurvinder Singh.

Several high-altitude areas of Jammu and Kashmir are receiving heavy snowfall for the last few days. According to reports, snowfall and landslides have forced closure of the important Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. It is the only all-weather road connecting Kashmir with rest of the country. The highway was closed for traffic following snowfall around Jawahar Tunnel and landslides from the hillocks at several places in Ramban district/.

Meanwhile, the administration in Kashmir have issued an avalanche warning for four districts -- Kupwara, Bandipora, Baramulla and Ganderbal.

According to a PTI report, security forces on Sunday night rescued 10 people, including two women and a child, after they were trapped in heavy snowfall at the high-altitude Sinthan pass that connects Kishtwar district with Anantnag.
