It is welcome news that large information technology (IT) companies are poised to recruit over 100,000 people locally in an attempt to bolster their teams to complete clients projects who have migrated to digital and increased outsourcing to reduce operational costs. Following a lack lustre June-quarter when firms stalled recruitment, IT companies have resumed employing and honouring all campus offers made to the college graduates this year. Plus, several IT companies deal volumes rose and a deal pipeline is healthier than before, even as they have alerted that the time taken to seal deals has extended in the current coronavirus-induced disruption. Many industry experts are of the opinion that the Covid-19 pandemic may have put a brake on IT hiring, but contract recruitment might rise as firms try to cut long-term cost commitments.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)India's largest software exporteris all set to employ around 40,000 new executivesmuch like last year, as per its head of global human resources, Milind Lakkad, despite a sharp fall in revenue in the quarter ended June on account of the coronavirus outbreak. The IT firm has continued onboarding freshers and resumed lateral hiring. TCS has a total workforce of 4,48,464 as of March, and it plans to double its US campus hires to approximately 2,000 this fiscal, in a bid to cut dependence on H-1B and L-1 work visas, which have become difficult to get. Lakkad had termed US President Donald Trumps decision to suspend H-1B and L-1 work visas as unfortunate and unfair.

Bengaluru-based software services exporter Infosys will hire more than 20,000 people, while HCL Technologies will onboard 15,000 new hires this year. More importantly, many mid-size IT companies had deferred joining dates for freshers this year. However, as work from home (WFH) has emerged as a potential model in these unprecedented times, companies are remotely hiring freshers.
