The government will conduct a door-to-door survey in migrant camps inhabited by displaced Kashmiri Pandits as part of the ‘Covid-19 health audit’ launched in Jammu. The multi-storey housing units remain vulnerable to the spread of the coronavirus due to the congested quarters. When the mass testing to cover 15 lakh people of Jammu district was announced, there was no clarity over covering the Pandit habitations as the government had ordered the survey on the basis of the electoral rolls. A majority of the migrant families are still enlisted in the electoral rolls of their respective districts in Kashmir, which they left in 1990 due to the eruption of militancy. About 44,000 Kashmiri migrant families live in camps and non-camp colonies in Jammu and are registered with the Relief and Rehabilitation Organisation. We approached the district administration to include the camps in the survey , said TK Bhat, Relief Commissioner. There are a total of 5,248 two-room flats at Jagti, Nagrota, Purkhoo, Muthi and Buta Nagar. Although no case of coronavirus has been reported from any of the camps, they remain vulnerable as the housing units are compact four-storey buildings housing 16 families on an average.
