Denying reports of Delhi Police using Aadhaar data to identify perpetrators of the Delhi riots, Union Home Minister Amit Shah today told the Rajya Sabha only driver’s licences and voter cards were being used for the purpose.

Replying to a discussion in the House, Shah said: “However, police must be empowered to use scientific methods to bring the culprits to book and should not be stopped in the name of privacy breach.”

The Home Minister asserted those responsible for the recent riots would be brought to book irrespective of their caste, religion and political affiliation. He said over 700 FIRs had been registered and 2,647 persons arrested based on scientific evidence till 12 noon today.

“They will be prosecuted and punished through a transparent and scientific investigation so that they feel the fear of law for a long time,” he said, adding 50 serious cases of murder, attacks on religious places, hospitals and educational institutions were being handed over to recently constituted three special investigation teams.
