Even though a number of programmes, events and seminars are organised every year on International Women’s Day with much fanfare to raise awareness about women education and empowerment, not every girl goes to school in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. School education for many girls continues to be a distant dream in J&K.

According to the Unified District Information System for Education report, the overall literacy rate among women in J&K at present is 58 per cent. In 2001, the literacy rate among women was 43 per cent, which increased to 56 per cent in 2011.
